Robinson Formula (1983)
One of the most widely used modern IBW formulas:

Ideal weight provides a useful starting reference but shouldn't be your only health metric.
Better Indicators of Health
- Body Composition: Body fat percentage reveals what weight consists of. 180 lbs at 12% body fat differs dramatically from 180 lbs at 30% body fat
- Waist Circumference: Waist over 40 inches (men) or 35 inches (women) indicates elevated health risks regardless of BMI or IBW

- Health Markers: Blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, and inflammatory markers provide direct health assessment

- Reassess after losing 10% whether further loss is necessary or beneficial
- Prioritize improved health markers over hitting specific numbers
If You're Below Ideal Weight Range
Consider whether low weight results from insufficient muscle mass:
- If body fat is normal but muscle mass is low, focus on strength training and eating at slight surplus
- Target 0.25-0.5 lb weekly weight gain to build muscle without excess fat
- If body fat is also low (under 12% men, under 20% women), increase calories more aggressively
